What to Expect

Wisdom teeth extraction is an outpatient surgery and can be performed in the office. Your doctor will determine what level and type of sedation to expect before the surgery. You will need someone to accompany you to the appointment and drive you home.

Shortly after the procedure, you will begin to regain feeling in your mouth. You can expect pain and swelling in your jaw and cheeks, as well as bleeding in your mouth. Your symptoms should improve by the third day after surgery. All pain and bleeding should be gone within a week of surgery. If the pain or bleeding is excessive or unbearable at any time during that week, give us a call. We want your recovery to be as easy and comfortable as possible.

Aftercare

To avoid dislodging your stitches or the blood clot over your surgery site, avoid spitting, smoking, alcohol, drinking from straws, strenuous activity, and touching the areas with your fingers or tongue. You can start using an ice pack on your face as soon as you get home. We will provide you with instructions on when and how to take medications recommended by your doctor.

Home Care

After surgery, the wound left behind won't completely heal for a couple of months, so you can still develop an infection weeks after surgery. Your oral surgeon will give you exact instructions on how to clean and protect your mouth after surgery.

Staying hydrated and eating well is essential for recovery, though you might not have an appetite directly after surgery. Ask your doctor for specific instructions on what you can eat in the first few days of recovery.
